The exhibition is presented in the form of a trilogy telling Ukraine’s long-lasting battle for freedom, independence, and national identity. For nearly a decade, I’ve documented many aspects of the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, photographing the conflict from both sides - the Revolution of 2013-14, the annexation of Crimea, the beginning of the war in the east of Ukraine, and now Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Part 1 "Culture of Confrontation" documents the democratic revolution on Kyiv’s Independence Square (in Ukrainian 'Maidan Nezalezhnosti') in 2013/14 with echoes of medieval history paintings and films.
Part 2, "Between Life and Death," is an elegiac meditation of deserted, snow-covered landscapes with traces of destruction from the fighting in the Donbas that has been going on since 2014.
Part 3 documents the apocalyptic dimension of the Russian war of terror against the Ukrainian civilian population, their suffering, but also their will to persevere.
